Marker drawing WLOP style art

Updated: Apr 2, 2023

I have used market and color pencil to draw WLOP's digital art one year ago. It was extremely difficult that time, and now I want to attempt it again.

Wlop's painting has his unique grey scale, since he uses monotonic color to do his color sketch and then change color curve in PhotoShop. Marker is a really transparent medium, so it is hard to recreate the density and vibrancy of color in his painting. I did a quick color study of how to draw skin tone using marker.

I used skin tone marker as the base and then layer different shades of cool grey. But the result grey is still too strong, I have to draw another layer of color pencil to create similar color. However, due to the texture of paper, it is really hard to recreate the smooth texture of skin.

This is my first layer of color. For skin, I used skin tone and cool grey marker, but for white stocking in the painting I simply drew the blue/ purple tint as base color.

This the second layer of marker, I increased the contrast of light and shadow using cool grey, and I left the face untouched. (It is hard to draw details using marker) I only used cool grey and blue to draw the hair, and for stocking I added a layer of cool grey. In the original painting, the shadow has blue reflective light, so it is easier to layer blue as a base and then draw shadow using makers. Also for hair, it is not simply dark and light. There is also colors in the shadow so it is important to have that color.

I did not really focus on the background since Wlop painted background with minimal detail either. In this step, I realized one critical error. My drawing is way too "flat" that it lack contrast, especially on skin. I tried to use thin watercolor to glaze. But it is way too hard for me to draw face in the correct tone. I need more practice in drawing details as well as layering colors. The final piece still lacks contrast.
